Preliminary Task: School Magazine
My magazine has a primary target audience of year 7 to year 13 at Chenderit School as it is about the events and news at the school, which concern the students and also the parents and other stake holders. I wanted the magazine to be friendly and show the school as a positive and welcoming environment.
I decided to use a mid shot of two students from key stage 4 wearing their uniform, so other students can relate to them. The image I used has a direct mode of address to connect with the audience. The models look happy, which makes them seem inviting. It also gives the impression the school is a happy place. They are both smartly dressed in uniform showing the school as orderly, smart and conventional. One of them is wearing glasses to stereotype intelligence and also I have used a boy and a girl to appeal to both genders and show equality between them.
I have used the colours red, white and black, which are the school colours. I used red for the masthead, as it is the most important and identifiable aspect of the magazine. Also the masthead is in a font, chalkboard, which appeals to my target audience as it cartoon like and informal.
The contents page has a repeat pattern of the school logo for the background. It keeps in the same house style of the front cover as it has the same masthead and fonts and the colours are continued through out. The pictures show teachers and a 6th former, which relate to the articles mention on the page. They have a direct mode of address and look friendly, promoting a positive image of the school.
At the start of this project I was new to InDesign and this inhibited my progress, however, as I went along my skills improved vastly to result in a good magazine front cover and contents page and I have also improved my Photoshop skills. From this task I have also learnt that I need to plan my project clearly, complete a mock up and plan each page in detail before realising it in an InDesign format.
